You’ve likely heard the stories of squatters on the news, for me, these stories almost became a reality. Last week when visiting one of my rent by the room properties I noticed a whole bunch of moving boxes, mattresses, and personal items in the back of my property. Looking into it a little further, I found an older gentleman organizing everything. He claimed his sister in law had purchased the property and he was helping her move. I talked to his sister, and his sister in law, and they claimed they had purchased the property for 1.9 million in cash but “their realtor couldn’t find the key”. Police were called and told them to leave, unfortunately, they left all their crap on my porch (and backyard) and now I have to pay someone to haul it off.

It looked pretty obvious to me they saw a vacant house and wanted to get in it. This squatter issue is only getting worse. If you have vacant property, now is the time to double down on having someone check on it. I’ve got the local PD stopping by to check on the house each week, they’ve been great. We also have new solar powered cameras being installed for my property managers to watch.

ABC news recently reported that two suspected squatters have been taken into custody for questioning after they allegedly killed a woman who walked in on them living in her mother’s New York City apartment, police sources told ABC News. The victim, Nadia Vitel, a 52-year-old woman from Spain, came to the U.S. to prepare her mother’s Manhattan apartment for a family friend, sources said. The Kips Bay apartment had been vacant for the last few months after Vitel’s mother died, sources said.

When Vitel went inside, she found a man and a woman living there, the sources said. A struggle ensued, and it appears Vitel was thrown into a sheetrock wall, sources said. The two suspects then allegedly stole Vitel’s Lexus and drove to New Jersey and then Pennsylvania, where they crashed near Harrisburg, sources said.

They were taken into custody on Friday in York, Pennsylvania, sources said.
